Fp Candidate Rob Smeenk |
Freedom Party's 1985 provincial candidate for London North, Rob Smeenk, has made some waves with his August 19/89 submission in the "Speaker's Corner" column in the London Free Press (Canada's poor should learn to help themselves).Casting aside conventional attitudes towards the poor and poverty itself, Smeenk challenged the philosophy of dealing with poverty through high taxes and government deficits while expecting no accountability from those who receive the benefits.
His opinions created a wide range of responses and interest, mostly positive, as sampled by the editorial letters reproduced below.
In another London Free Press essay on poverty titled "What Do We Owe The Poor?", Freedom Party president Robert Metz was featured as the only contrasting voice against a tide of opinion calling for increased government assistance to the poor. A portion of the
essay has been reproduced.
