A Freedom government will reduce the threat of creeping theocracy

December 5, 2010, Toronto - The practice of opening the daily proceedings of the Ontario Legislature with official prayers should be eliminated. So says a 2011 election plank issued today by Freedom Party of Ontario. The plank is being promoted with a provocative new pre-election video ad that pulls no punches.

"It's outrageous", says Freedom Party of Ontario leader Paul McKeever. "Our soldiers are being murdered in Afghanistan in a war against those who believe that - everywhere - government should be the hand of Allah. Yet Dalton McGuinty's Liberals and Tim Hudak's Progressive Conservatives are inviting theocracy through the back door by making prayers to Allah and other gods part of the official process of opening the Ontario Legislature each day.

"Prayer should be a personal matter. In a democracy, our law makers have no authority other than that which is delegated to them by the governed. They are not accountable to anyone's god: they are accountable only to the people they govern. By removing prayer from the official proceedings of the Ontario Legislature, a Freedom government will send a message to theocrats of every religious stripe, in every corner of the globe, that Ontario is opposed to theocracy, and committed to democracy."
