Taxes, Religion & Schooling

Two Wrongs Don't Make a Right

New Video says extending public funding to private religious schools will not cure crisis caused by the promotion of moral relativism in public schools

June 15, 2007
Freedom Party today released a video that exposes the folly of Progressive Conservative leader John Tory's proposal to fund private religious schools (but not non-religious schools) with tax revenues.  Titled "Taxes, Religion & Schooling", the new video can be watched on Freedom Party's youtube.com channel:

(running time approx: 16 min., 47 sec)

"In the age of the nuclear bomb, we are in the midst of a great moral crisis", says Freedom Party leader, Paul McKeever.  "Moral relativism and religious extremism are literally threatening the long-term survival of the human race.  And here we have John Tory proposing to raise the threat level.

"Tax-funded public schools, over the last two decades, have taught our children that there is no objective way to evaluate moral codes or to judge conduct; that nobody should judge anyone's beliefs or conduct.  As a result, many of today's public school children have been deprived of a means even to do such things as distinguish the conduct of theocratic terrorists from that of western armed forces who are attempting to defend democracy.

"John Tory's proposal would worsen the crisis by making religious indoctrination more widespread.  To the extent that we teach children that the facts of reality cannot be known, or that there is a supernatural realm in which the laws of nature do not apply, science and knowledge of reality are threatened.  To the extent that we fail to teach children the indispensable role of reason in the discovery of knowledge, human survival is threatened: neither majority rule nor prayer have been responsible for the discovery of insulin or of means to put a man on the moon.

"If parents want their children to believe that nothing can ever really be known for sure, and that ethics are just popular social conventions; if parents want their children to live a life of unquestioning obedience instead of a life of rational inquiry; that is their choice.  However, it is immoral - and it is not the role of the government of a free and democratic country - to fund a war against reality and reason with money taken from those reject moral relativism or mysticism.

"Hopefully, this video will help people to appreciate the folly and danger of Tory's proposal to fund private religious schools with tax revenues."
